About the Author
Nathaniel Hawthorne (1802-1864), American novelist, was born in Salem, Massachusetts. He graduated from Bowdoin College, where Longfellow and Franklin Pierce were his friends. He is the author of The Scarlet Letter and The House of Seven Gables. His other books for children include A Wonder Book for Girls and Boys, Tanglewood Tales, and The Whole History of Grandfather's Chair.
