Novel Kids Book Club for middle readers

It's such a privilege to host Bookbug's Novel Kids Book Club for middle readers. We began with Home of the Brave by Katherine Applegate. I was amazed at the thoughtful discussion engendered by this book about a refugee from Africa to Minnesota. Among other things, we've read a book about a brilliant girl with cerebral palsy (Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper), a science fiction novel from the 1960s (The White Mountains by John Christopher) and a book about a boy who leaves home to go live off the land (My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George).  This year's highlight for many was facetiming with Jacqueline Kelley - author of The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate. This month we read and discussed a memoir about a boy from Malawi who taught himself science, built a windmill and transformed his village (The Boy who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealy). Check out the lego towers produced, with limited lego supply, by our young readers. ----   Shirley
